Stellenausschreibung Nr. IMT 24-21
IMT 24-21 Bachelor or Master Thesis: Applying MRI to study the water flow in the stem of a plant in high and low magnetic fields
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a very powerful imaging technique that is extensively and routinely utilized in hospitals and clinics for medical diagnoses. Its power is due to major features such as its ability to address different nuclei (1H, 13C, 19F, 23Na, 31P, etc.), its ability to measure the static properties of a sample (concentration maps, T1 maps, T2 maps), and the ability to measure the dynamic properties of the sample (diffusion, flow). In this project, we want to apply MRI to study the water flow in the two main transport pathways (xylem and phloem) in the stem of a plan, and to monitor the response of this flow to changes in light intensity, temperature, and soil humidity. Such information is extremely useful to obtain knowledge about the plant’s health and growth rate. The experiments should be carried out on a high-field (15.4T) MRI scanner as well as a low-field (1.05T) system, and an extensive comparison of the results from the two magnets should be done. In this project, a large group with diverse expertise in MRI imaging, NMR spectroscopy, and hardware development will support you.
