IMT 27-21 Internship: Toxicity evaluation with Escherichia coli


Nuclear magnetic resonance is an analysis tool with several advantages, such as being non-invasive and allowing real-time monitoring. Thus, it offers great opportunities for cell and cell metabolism monitoring over extended periods. However, one of the disadvantages is the low sensitivity of NMR. To overcome this disadvantage there are different hyperpolarization techniques which enhance the NMR signals. For the application of those technologies, bacteria need to be exposed to an NMR signal amplification chemical. Hence, the biocompatibility of this chemical needs to be examined through toxicity evaluation with a custom E. coli strain.


  • Cell handling and culturing
  • Generating of toxicity experiment design
  • Concentration determination and diluting experiments
  • Evaluating toxicity test results

This internship offers the opportunity of learning cell handling and culturing as well as working in an S1 bio lab. Additionally, first experience can be collected in planning and preparing experiments and gaining first insight into the work in research.

Persönliche Qualifikation
  • studies in Biological engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering or similiar
  • First experience with work in a S1 biology lab and cell handling are of advantage
  • self-motivated and independent working
  • good English skills are of advantage
