IMT 28-2023 Bachelor- / Master Thesis: Thermomagnetic energy harvesting using ferromagnetic materials
Innovative approaches are presently under development, utilizing magnetic film actuation to transform residual heat into usable electrical power. Particularly encouraging are adaptable film cantilevers that exhibit significant changes in magnetization based on temperature fluctuations. When brought into contact with a heat source, these cantilevers initiate self-oscillation, facilitating the conversion of mechanical energy into electrical power. Consequently, even slight temperature differentials in the surroundings can be harnessed to energize applications such as wireless sensor networks for the 'Internet of Things'.
This interdisciplinary endeavor is dedicated to the generation of energy on a miniature scale, encompassing diverse domains of materials science, mechanical engineering, and electronic engineering. The focal point of this initiative can be customized to align with the applicant's specific interests and competencies, a matter that can be discussed in greater detail during a formal interview.
- Characterization of material properties (structure, mechanical, thermal, magnetic)
- Modelling, design and simulation (FEM Multi-physics, Lumped Element Modelling)
- Rapid prototyping (Optical lithography, 3D Printing, Laser technology)
- Characterization of demonstrator variants (thermo-mechanical, electrical properties)
- Simulation-based design optimization
In executing this project, the IMT is equipped with an expansive array of state-of-the-art facilities, including a 600 m² clean room, advanced rapid prototyping capabilities like 3D printing and laser cutting, Construction and Connection Technology labs, as well as various metrology laboratories. A high level of support is provided to ensure that the project progresses seamlessly within the specified timeline.
