In both its research and its teaching, the professorship aims to develop construction design fundamentals, methodological skills and specialist knowledge in the field of building construction – with a special emphasis on sustainable and circular construction. It is desired that the professorship integrates constructive experiments and prototypical implementations in scales of up to 1:1 into the Bachelor's and Master's degree programs. The goal is to develop a research profile that focuses on construction methods and design principles based on social, economic, ecological, and aesthetic aspects.

The holder of the professorship is to represent the subject of Building Construction and Design comprehensively – this also means externally. An active role in academic self-administration is expected, as is close cooperation with partners from construction practice and, in particular, with the KIT Department of Civil Engineering, Geo- and Environmental Sciences.
