Job description

The Institute of Meteorology and Climate Research - Tropospheric Research (IMK-TRO) with its 100 employees investigates atmospheric processes experimentally, numerically and theoretically from the local to the global scale and from the short term to climatology. The working group "Boundary-layer and convective systems" focuses on experimental studies of the link between boundary-layer dynamics and convective systems. The KITcube is our integrated atmospheric observation system that is used on campaigns worldwide. The KITcube consists of state-of-the-art remote-sensing instrumentation and is Germanys largest mobile measurement infrastructure for atmospheric measurements. 

In this position you will analyze measurement data obtained with the KITcube during Swabian MOSES measurement campaign in the southern Black Forest. The campaign aims to generate a better understanding of thunderstorm initiation, which is observed frequently in the region. It is assumed that the frequent development of thunderstorms is related to the influence of the orography on the atmospheric flow in the Black Forest region. A frequently discussed trigging mechanism is flow-convergence on the leeward side of obstacles. The aim of this position is to evaluate and analyze data-obtained using modern remote-sensing instruments (e.g. radar, lidar) to obtain insight into flow phenomena in the vicinity of thunderstorms.

Your tasks include:

  • development of algorithms for quality control of remote-sensing measurements and application of existing methods to determine, for example, the place of origin and path of thunderstorms
  • development of methods for combining radar and lidar data to generate products for flow analysis
  • combination of the products obtained with other information and data sources (model information, satellite information, measurements from other measuring devices) to generate a complete analysis
  • evaluation of the results in relation to meteorological phenomena, discussion and reference to existing theories as well as publication in scientific journals

There is the possibility to obtain a PhD title as part of the job.

Personal qualification

You have a university degree (Diploma (Uni)/Master) in meteorology, physics, mathematics or computer science. In case of a degree in physics, mathematics or computer science, you will need proof of meteorological knowledge. Comparable natural science or engineering courses can be considered if you have sufficient experience in the field of fluid physics. We also expect programming skills in a script-based language (e.g. Matlab, Python, R). Existing knowledge of lidar/radar/boundary layer meteorology/convection dynamics as well as experience in the analysis of complex measurement or model data is an advantage. Fluency in written and spoken German or English, the ability to work in a team and the willingness to travel and participate measurement campaigns and scientific conferences are required.


Salary category 13, depending on the fulfillment of professional and personal requirements.
