University Professorship (W3) “Atmospheric Trace Gases and Remote Sensing”

Job description

We are looking for an internationally recognised person in the field of remote sensing of atmospheric composition. You have experience in the deployment, respectively in the development, of remote sensing instruments and methods, preferably including the thermal infrared. Your research improves the process understanding regarding atmospheric composition and climate. You will lead the section “Balloons, Aircrafts and Satellites” at IMKASF and develop it further in terms of technology and research content.. Your research creates interfaces towards other observational methods and modelling at the Institute of Meteorology and Climate Research, at KIT, in the Helmholtz Programme “Changing Earth” and beyond.

The IMKASF comprises three sections, all of them working on key areas  related to questions about the role of atmospheric composition in climate change, in particular the role of the stratosphere. The section assigned to this professorship combines world-leading expertise in the development and application of infrared remote sensing and retrieval theory using various platforms and devices (e.g. MIPAS, GLORIA and the further development GLORIA-Lite). The other two sections focus on remote sensing of atmospheric composition from the ground and from operational satellites, as well as atmospheric modelling of air composition in global and regional model configurations. The institute sections collaborate closely in a spirit of partnership. A joint research data management is being continuously developed . 

KIT offers an excellent interdisciplinary environment at the interface between natural sciences and engineering. You will cooperate closely with colleagues at the KIT Centers for Climate and Environment and MathSEE and their graduate schools. You will have numerous opportunities to establish new collaborations at KIT and beyond. In your function as section head in the program-oriented research you actively engage in the development of our infrastructures in the Research Field Earth and Environment and contribute to the Helmholtz Programme “Changing Earth – Sustaining our Future”, particularly in the framework of the new “Karlsruhe Integrated Atmospheric Observation System (KIAOS)”. Successful acquisition of third-party funding thereby serves to strengthen and further develop your research focii.

With a reduced teaching obligation of 2 semester hours per week, you will represent Atmospheric Remote Sensing in compulsory and optional lectures and practical training of the degree programs "Meteorology and Climate Physics” (BSc/MSc,German/English). Participation in the academic self-administration of KIT is appreciated.

Personal qualification

A PhD in meteorology, physics, environmental physics or a related subject area is expected. Outstanding, internationally visible academic achievements (equivalent to habilitation or successfully evaluated junior professorship) are required, experience in personnel management and pedagogical aptitude need to be demonstrated.

Employment is subject to Art. 14, par. (2) of the KIT Act in conjunction with Art. 47 LHG Baden-Württemberg (Act of Baden-Württemberg on Universities and Colleges).
