Vacancy No. 1089/2025

Doctoral Researcher (f/m/d)

part time 75%

Job description

We seek an enthusiastic and dynamic doctoral researcher with a strong interest in petrography, geochemistry, and fluid-rock interaction. The position is funded by Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), Germany as part of the geoscientific research program “GEO:N - Geosciences for Sustainability”. You will be part of an interdisciplinary research group, including university, research organizations, and industry. The offered position is for the project “Investigations for the protection of the subsurface from modified geothermal fluids”, a joint project with the DVGW Research Center at Engler-Bunte-Institut (DVGW-EBI) and the Institute for Thermal Energy Technology and Safety (ITES) of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. The project is investigating the risks arising from the injection of modified geothermal fluids, particularly after critical metals extraction. The core component of the project is a monitoring test facility which will be operated at the geothermal plant, allowing to experimentally investigate the interactions of modified geothermal fluids both with materials of the injection well and reservoir rocks under reinjection and reservoir conditions. Your work includes sampling of suitable rocks, planning and supervision of the experiments, as well as petrographic and geochemical characterisation of altered rocks, materials and water.

Your tasks are:

  • to plan and perform the analyses and experiments and interpret the data,
  • to publish your data in international peer-reviewed journals and to present your research results at national and international scientific meetings, and
  • to write internal reports and communicate with the research partners.
Personal qualification
  • Master's degree (or equivalent) in mineralogy, geochemistry, experimental petrology or related fields,
  • interest in environmental issues and in geochemistry, water-rock interaction processes, and hydrothermal experiments,
  • good knowledge in petrography and geochemistry,
  • first experience in lab work, particularly in SEM, XRF, and XRD analysis,
  • willingness to integrate an interdisciplinary team, and
  • excellent skills in English (written and oral).
