Vacancy No. 1133/2025

Doctoral Researchers (f/m/d)

The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and the University of Stuttgart offer within the German Research Council (DFG)-funded Research Training Group (RTG) 3076 “Sustainable hydrogels: From chemical structures to applicability (SusGel)” 9 PhD positions (doctoral researchers (f/m/d)).

Job description

Replacing synthetic polymers with polysaccharides from renewable sources will contribute to a sustainable society. Polysaccharides from land plants and algae for the production of hydrogels show, however, a large natural variability leading to varying gel properties. The RTG SusGel addresses these challenges in an interdisciplinary approach of A) polysaccharide chemistry, B) analytics, C) modelling, and D) bio engineering applications. Early career researchers with backgrounds in (food) chemistry, physics, bio- and chemical engineering will work closely together to research and develop the basis for the targeted use of sustainable polysaccharides in hydrogel applications.

You will work in a dedicated, ambitious and supportive research team in state-of-the-art facilities and will experience the benefits of a structured PhD training program that provides doctoral students with interdisciplinary theoretical and experimental knowledge, methodological and general research skills, and the opportunity to develop your personal strengths. As a member of the structured training program you will benefit from mentoring by a team of two interdisciplinary professors, RTG-specific scientific and personal development workshops, networking with academic and industrial leaders, the participation in national and international conferences, and an optional research stay abroad.

Personal qualification
  • Master´s degree in the fields of food chemistry, chemistry, physics, bio- and chemical engineering, or an equivalent qualification.
  • Substantial knowledge, proven interest, laboratory experience (if applicable) and experimental expertise in at least one of the following research areas are of advantage: Carbohydrates, carbohydrate-active enzymes, polymer chemistry, spectroscopic methods, material science, 3D-printing, statistical physics and molecular dynamic simulations, formulation technologies.
  • Excellent communication skills as well as the willingness and ability to work in an interdisciplinary team of scientists who think beyond the boundaries of scientific disciplines.
  • Ability to conduct in-depth technical discussions in English.
  • Creativity, a solution-oriented work attitude, and problem-solving skills
  • Readiness to work in a diverse, open-minded, and tolerant team.
