University Professorship (W3) „Building Science and Technology“
Job description
The Division "Natural and Built Environment" and the KIT- Department of Architecture of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) invite applications for a University Professorship (W3) "Building Science and Technology" at the Institute of Building Design and Technology (IEB) to be commenced as of summer semester 2027. The university professorship is part of the collegial institute management.
In addition to application-oriented research, the university professorship's tasks include the development of research-oriented teaching through lectures, seminars, and design support on climate-friendly and sustainable building concepts, building envelopes, and building technology. The aforementioned topics are to be integrated into the design training in the bachelor's and master's degree programs in architecture as well as into the supervision of final theses to the extent of 9 SWS.
The university professorship will focus on research and teaching related to building physics issues concerning materials, constructions, and user-oriented indoor climate concepts, as well as technical building equipment and energy supply for climate-neutral construction.
The expectation is that a research profile will be developed that focuses on innovative, integrated building and energy concepts for the emission-free operation of buildings in harmony with architecture and urban design. The focus will be on new approaches to construction and building components, as well as building technology, with an emphasis on circular and simple construction. Active solicitation of third-party funding is expected.
The holder of the university professorship represents the field of building science and technology in its entirety, including externally. An active role in academic self-administration and close cooperation with partners from the construction industry, and in particular with the KIT-Department Department of Civil, Geo and Environmental Engineering and the KIT Energy Lab, is expected.
Personal qualification
KIT is seeking a candidate who has outstanding expertise in the fields of building physics and technical building equipment and can demonstrate this through their own research projects and/or completed buildings.
Applicants understand both disciplines as integral components of user-centered building design and sustainable building use in terms of the appropriate and responsible use of resources and as a response to the effects of climate change.
They are able to incorporate these topics into research and teaching at the KIT Department of Architecture, both in theory and in practice. Excellent language skills in German or English are expected, as is a willingness to learn German or English within a reasonable period of time, if necessary.
In addition to the general requirements under employment law, recruitment requirements include a degree in engineering, physics, or architecture, pedagogical aptitude, and teaching skills, as well as a particular aptitude for scientific work, demonstrated by a doctorate as well as habilitation, or equivalent achievements.
Employment is subject to Art. 14, par. (2) of the KIT Act in conjunction with Art. 47 LHG Baden-Württemberg (Act of Baden-Württemberg on Universities and Colleges).
