Vacancy No. 428/2025

Academic Employee (f/m/d)

75 % part-time

Job description

As part of our international research team, you will work at the interface between observation and modeling of atmospheric dust processes.

Your main responsibilities include:

  • Data collection and analysis: You will collect and analyze novel dust particle size distribution measurements at European observatiories - ranging from the smallest to giant particles.
  • Model development: Using observational data as a reference, you will contribute to improving the dust representation in the ICON-ART model with regard to key dust properties, such as particle size, shape, mineralogical composition, and optical properties.
  • Model testing and simulations: You will investigate the impact of different model resolutions, including storm-resolving scales, and conduct simulations of dust transport from North Africa. The goal is to constraint the dust direct radiative effect with observational data and quantify the regional climate response.
  • Scientific communication: You will present your research findings in peer-reviewd journals, scientific conferences, workshops, etc.
  • Collaboration and teaching: You will work closely with project partners in Spain and Germany and have the opportunity to actively contribute to teaching and gain valuable didactic experience.

Personal qualification

You have:

  • A completed scientific university degree (Master's) in meteorology, physics, or a related field
  • Solid knowledge of atmospheric physics
  • Very good programming skills (Python, Fortran, Shell, etc.)
  • Prior knowledge in the field of atmospheric aerosols, e. g. minderal dust, is advantageous
  • Experience with numerical weather and climate models and aerosol measurement is also advantageous
  • Excellent English skills, both written and spoken
  • High motivation and practive behavior
  • Communication skills, teamwork, as well as independent and structured working methods
