Vacancy No. 502/2025

Doctoral Researcher (f/m/d), Scientific Staff Member (f/m/d) in the Field of High-Temperature Superconductors

M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering, Microwave Engineering, Electronics, Physics, Microsystems Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering

Job description

Your responsibilities include the following tasks:

  • Identification and analysis of promising high-temperature superconductor (HTS) materials for the construction of highly sensitive EPR resonators. This includes investigating commercially available superconductors as well as materials provided by cooperation partners at KIT. The task involves analyzing their electromagnetic properties, loss mechanisms, and practical limitations such as fabrication, cooling requirements, and long-term stability under experimental conditions.
  • Conducting extensive FEM simulations for the development and optimization of HTS-based EPR resonators. The focus is on maximizing sensitivity by increasing the Q-factor while minimizing dielectric and conductor-related losses.
  • Development of an experimental platform for integrating and testing HTS resonators in EPR and NMR spectroscopy environments. This includes the design of resonator holders, coupling mechanisms, interfaces for cryogenic cooling, and RF connections. After fabrication, the resonators will be characterized at existing X-band and high-field spectrometers at KIT, and sensitivity benchmarks will be established.
  • Participation in lectures, including conducting related exercises, participating in practical courses, and supervising students.
  • Publication of research results.

The position offers the opportunity for a part-time PhD.

Personal qualification

You have:

  • A completed university degree (Master’s) in Electrical Engineering, Microwave Engineering, Electronics, Physics, Microsystems Engineering, Mechatronics, or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Solid expertise in high-frequency and microwave circuit design as well as experience with finite-element method (FEM) simulation tools.
  • Experience in microfabrication techniques as well as knowledge of NMR and EPR spectroscopy are advantageous.
