Introduction

The Institute of Meteorology and Climate Research Atmospheric Aerosol Research (IMKAAF) conducts research on atmospheric aerosol processes of importance for the environment, weather, and climate. This research utilizes the worldwide unique AIDA atmospheric simulation chamber, state-of-the-art laboratory experiments, and innovative mobile measurement devices. Currently, the new 75 m³ large atmospheric simulation chamber AIDAc2 is constructed and implemented. For the instrumentation starting from summer 2026 we seek for an aerosol physicist supporting us in planning and implementing instruments for aerosol generation and measurement.

Your Tasks

  • Setup and installation of instruments for generating and characterizing aerosols at the new AIDAc2 atmospheric simulation chamber
  • Development, test and implementation of new measurement systems for the selective sampling of total aerosol, interstitial aerosol, and the residues of cloud droplets and ice crystals at AIDAc2
  • Contributing to the design of components for the installation and operation of the new measurement systems at AIDAc2, taking into account the operational requirements at the new simulation chamber
  • Conducting test measurements and contributing to first scientific experiments with AIDAc2
  • Technical documentation, functional specifications, and operating instructions for the new measurement systems

Your Profile

  • A completed graduate degree (Master’s or university diploma) with a Ph.D. in physics or in atmospheric and environmental sciences, specializing in aerosol physics and/or aerosol measurement technology
  • Professional experience in the field of aerosol generation, aerosol sampling, and aerosol measurements
  • Extensive knowledge of aerosol physics and aerosol measurement technology
  • Practical experience in setting up and operating aerosol measurement devices and counterflow impactors (Counterflow Virtual Impactor CVI or Pumped Counterflow Virtual Impactor PCVI)
  • Experience in experimental aerosol physics
  • Programming skills in LabView and Python
  • Strong communication skills in German and English
  • Ability to work in a team and to work in a structured and goal-oriented manner
