Job description

This University Professorship (W3) for Electrochemistry at KIT is expected to strategically strengthen collaboration at the Helmholtz Institute Ulm, among other things with respect to the Cluster of Excellence Post Lithium Storage of KIT and Ulm University (POLiS https://www.postlithiumstorage.org/en/).

The University Professorship (W3) “Electrochemistry” will contribute to maintaining the international lead in battery research and to advancing the “Materials Acceleration Platform” in terms of both strategy and contents. The future holder of the professorship will head the Department of “Electrochemistry of Batteries” at HIU.

The scientific focus of the University Professorship (W3)  “Electrochemistry” will lie on the investigation and development of novel methods and technologies for the synthesis and identification of new high-performance, long-term stable electrode materials, electrolytes, and electrolyte-electrode interfaces preferably by autonomous materials synthesis and high-throughput characteri-zation. Autonomous production, high-performance analytics, and materials characterization will be combined on the existing “Materials Acceleration Platform” (MAP). Multi-target sputtering and other automated solid-state synthesis methods as well as mixing and pipetting robots can be applied. Characterization will be based on X-ray processes, XPS, optical spectroscopy, and NMR. The range of methods will be complemented by electrochemical operando methods, including impedance spectroscopy, and various galvanostatic and potentiostatic methods as well as their combinations with offline analysis methods. Research is expected to focus on the development of new processes for the accelerated investigation of materials. Collaboration with KIT’s machine learning experts will enable comprehensive use of the generated datasets and AI-based further development of the methods.

The professorship will execute large-scale research tasks at HIU with a teaching obligation of 2 hours per week per semester at KIT.

Personal qualification

Applicants are expected to have comprehensive research experience in the areas mentioned and to have made excellent scientific achievements of high international visibility. Moreover, applicants should have leadership experience, be able to work in a team, and be qualified to provide academic education. Applicants are expected to cooperate across disciplines and to participate in the scientific organization of large-scale research funded by the Helmholtz Association at HIU as well as in academic self-administration. Active acquisition of third-party funding will be of crucial importance.
